Cold or Flu Slowing You Down? Need A Boost?

Now more than ever, we need to boost our immune system and prepare ourselves for the long winter ahead. Many of my clients have complained of a hacking cough with post nasal drip. This virus, which obviously cannot be managed with antibiotics, seems to linger for weeks wrecking havoc on the respiratory system as well as the muscular system. As a bodyworker and advocate of therapeutic essential oils, I recommend some simple tips to relieve muscle aches and pain due to cough and prolonged bed rest as well as some useful tips on boosting the immune system naturally.

Do’s:

• Dry brush the body with a natural brisle brush to slough off dry skin and stimulate the lymphatic system (if you don’t know about the lymphatic system, I urge you to read about the crucial role this body system has on your immune system.)

• Take warm showers to loosen congestion and warm muscles, towel dry and massage an organic oil into the body. I love coconut oil, but try sesame, or grape seed oil.

• Get a massage. Massage works on all body systems and is recommended by doctors to optimize wellness. I have been a massage therapist for eleven years. There is published literature to read and years of experience I can share with you on the benefits of massage.

Use only “therapeutic grade” essential oils. I cannot stress this enough. I am not talking about the the brands you can pick up at the mall or healthfood store. The bottle should read “therapeutic grade.” Remember, if the label reads ‘not to be ingested’ and you apply it to your skin…Guess What?…you’re ingesting it right into your blood stream. Do you see the importance of real, ingestible, therapeutic oils? If you have specific questions about oils, write to this post with your questions and I’ll be happy to answer them.

• Do use non-toxic, organic household products. Please don’t clean with harsh chemicals. I know it costs a little extra to use safe (non-toxic), organic, household cleaners…but it’s worth it. If you absolutely cannot or do not want to spend the extra money, there are many recipes for inexpensive and natural alternatives to cleaning mixtures you can create at home. Your body absorbs (and stores in your fat tissue) all the residue of chemicals and pesticides from many of the common household cleaners on the market.

If you have a cold or flu, your immune system is already compromised–don’t add tissue insult with toxic fumes. If you would like a recommendation or stores to shop to find good household products, just ask. I’m happy to help.

• Do eat good, organically grown foods. Lots of green leafy vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds and fruits. Eat in moderation. Many nutritionists and publications urge us to eat several times a day (5-8xs) but never more than a small salad plate full. We should eat until we are full not stuffed. Eat slowly, chewing our food and resting 20 mins before reaching for seconds. It may seem like a tall list to achieve, but add each tip, one weekly, and you’ll see how easy it is to achieve.  It would be great if you could add all of these tips into your daily routine ASAP but don’t be discouraged if you don’t or can’t. What matters is that you add at least one this week. Taking care of yourself should be at the top of your list everyday. YOU matter. Without YOU, your business and family suffer. Isn’t it time for a boost?

  4. These are all wonderful uses and I plan to use my coconut oil for plenty of these things (although I opt for unrefined shea butter for skin care). But, if you are eating a healthy, genuinely natural diet, you probably should not need sunscreen, not even coconut oil. Since transforming our diet, we no longer burn.
